Degaussers create powerful magnetic fields to sanitize magnetic storage media, rendering the drive useless. Degaussable media includes rotational hard drives; computer, audio, and video tapes; and magnetic removable storage media such as floppy, ZIP, JAZZ, REV, and Syquest disks. Classified data stored on magnetic media must be degaussed in an NSA listed degausser prior to being physically destroyed in an NSA listed crusher or shredder.
The Model EMP1000-HS degausser has been evaluated by the NSA and is listed on the NSA EPL for Magnetic Degaussers erasing data on 5,000 Oe longitudinal and perpendicular recorded disk drives and 3,000 Oe for tape media (includes LTO8 tape). The EMP1000-HS degausser is compact and portable and can be easily transported to the location of the media for onsite erasure and declassification.
